The Wisdom House, in collaboration with leading psychologists, conducted a comprehensive study on the mental health of Afghan girls. This research aimed to assess their psychological well-being and identify the major challenges that young girls in Afghanistan face. The study involved 300 girls from across the country who participated online and responded to various questions.
The questions for this study were meticulously designed in collaboration with psychologists, adhering to scientific and ethical principles. Online questionnaires were provided to participants, ensuring a safe and pressure-free environment where they could openly share their experiences and feelings. This approach facilitated access to a broader demographic and allowed for diverse perspectives to be examined.
Key Findings:
1. Suicidal Thoughts:
- The research revealed that out of the 300 participants, 100 reported having suicidal thoughts. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for addressing the mental health crisis among girls in Afghanistan.
2. Severe Mental Health Issues:
- Many participants reported being in a state of severe psychological distress. Contributing factors include social, economic, cultural pressures, and even security challenges, all of which play a significant role in exacerbating mental health struggles.
3. Lack of Access to Psychological Support :
- One of the major issues identified was the lack of adequate access to mental health services and counseling. Many girls expressed that having such resources could have significantly helped them cope with their problems.
Conclusion:
This study highlights a serious mental health crisis among girls in Afghanistan. The prevalence of suicidal thoughts and the severe psychological distress reported by a significant portion of participants serve as a wake-up call for society. Immediate actions and support programs are crucial to improving the mental health and well-being of this vulnerable group.
